We can’t wait to welcome you in Salemi!
Our fully funded residency - in collaboration with Badr el Jundi Foundation - has been awarded to Katy Stubbs.
A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who applied and shared their work with us. We received an exceptional number of strong applications, making the selection process especially difficult: so much so that we decided to invite 11 artists instead of 9!
We’re really grateful for your interest and support for Salemi Ceramics!
Residency Opportunities
1. Standard Residency
- For artists developing new or existing work
- 6-9 artists will be selected
2. Ceramics Mural / Installation Residency
- For artists creating site-specific murals or installations in the historic town of Salemi
- 2 artists will be selected
- Includes a €500 artist reward
3. One fully funded Residency - in collaboration with Badr el Jundi Foundation
Among the selected artists, one will receive additional funding from the Foundation, covering:
- Flights (up to 800€)
- Professional artwork shipping (up to 500€)
- Professional packaging, crates, boxes (up to 400€)
- Complementary dinner stipend of 87,50€/week - for the duration of the residency
Residency Conditions
Duration
- Minimum 6 weeks
- Maximum 3 monhts
We provide (free of charge):
- Pick-up/drop-off at Palermo airport (on arranged dates)
- Accommodation (private room in a shared flat, walking distance to studio)
- Breakfast & lunch (Mon-Fri)
- Participation in cultural activities with our students
- 24/7 access to private workspace in the convent
- Studio access, materials, and tools (on request)
- Option to sell works via studio gallery (40% commission)
Additional Notes:
- Residents are expected to donate one work to the Salemi Ceramics permanent collection.
- Flights and shipping of artworks (except for the Foundation-funded artist) are not covered.
- Dedicated technical assistance is not available.
- The installative works will take the form of murals in public spaces, specifically in the streets of Salemi’s Old Town. We’ve already mapped out possible spots, and residents can either choose from the recommended locations or suggest their own. The only limitation is that permits are required from local authorities, so a few places may not be possible.
The historic Old Town (dating back to the 1400s-1500s) is semi-abandoned: most residents left after the 1968 earthquake, and many more have since moved to the “new” town. Our goal is to create a ceramics “trail” through the Old Town that invites visitors to explore its abandoned streets. Because the area is largely uninhabited, there are plenty of available spaces of varying sizes and character.
