Joan Carreras
Barcelona-born ceramicist, baker and industrial designer exploring where clay, design and craft meet, collaborator of Xavier Mañosa and brands such as Hermès and Alessi.
Joan Carreras (Barcelona, 1993) is a ceramicist and a baker: he grew up in his family's bakery, the first of the fourth generation of bakers. There he lost his fear of these two complex materials of infinite possibilities, and today he explores them with a researcher's attitude, discovering how they can be combined, adapted or transformed depending on the context in which they are applied.
He trained as an industrial designer at ELISAVA and the University of Barcelona, and in 2017 his grandmother Lourdes finally introduced him to ceramics, a practice she had cultivated over 40 years assisting artists such as Lluís Clapers and Alfons Borrell. There began his research into bringing ceramics closer to design, art and technology, applying industrial processes to that inherited artisanal foundation, building on the care and meticulousness it takes to bake bread for others to eat.
Since 2018 he has worked in Xavier Mañosa's studio as both industrial designer and ceramicist, taking part in the conception, development and realisation of every project that passes through it. He has also collaborated with brands including Hermès, Alessi, Bobo Choses, Openhouse Magazine and Hetheaven, and has exhibited work in Milan, Barcelona, La Bisbal and Paris. Now, from his studio in El Prat just outside Barcelona, he is beginning a new chapter surrounded by a rural environment, suited to exploring practices that city conditions don't allow.
