About this course

This course is designed for artists, ceramicists, and students who want to deepen their understanding of the human figure through clay modelling. Combining technical instruction, anatomical study, and practical sculpting exercises, it offers an intensive introduction to figurative sculpture in clay.

Participants will learn to construct the human figure using proportion, balance, volume, and gesture, while developing confidence in translating observation into three-dimensional form. The program alternates between structured studio exercises and live sessions with a model, allowing students to work both from direct observation and constructive principles.

The course covers the fundamentals of figure sculpture, including body structure, torso modelling, head construction, and the relationship between anatomy and expression. Participants will also explore movement, surface treatment, and sculptural interpretation. Through demonstrations, individual feedback, and group critiques, each student will receive guidance adapted to their level and interests.

The course encourages experimentation, observation, and technical development within a focused and inspiring studio environment. By the end of the workshop, participants will have completed a series of anatomical and figure studies, as well as a more developed figurative sculpture, while gaining practical tools and observational skills to continue exploring figurative sculpture independently.

Students may choose to have selected works fired and shipped after the retreat. As pieces require approximately one week to dry before firing, this process will take place once the course has concluded.

Firing and Shipping

Although the course is primarily focused on learning and experimentation rather than producing finished works, students will have the opportunity to keep selected pieces created during the workshop.

Firing and shipping are optional and charged separately. As sculptural pieces must dry slowly before firing, all selected works will be processed after the retreat has ended.

Unglazed bisque pieces are generally not shipped, as they are highly fragile and more likely to break during transport. Shipping costs depend on the size, weight, and destination of the final works.
