Ceramics Pill #4: Ceramics of Place

Barcelona-based artist Maria Roy treats earth as a living material, one that carries the histories, politics and ecologies of the place it comes from.
In this session, she’ll talk with you about ceramics as an art practice connected to territory, and about what that relationship means and what its value can be.
What you’ll explore
In the first part, you’ll look at ecology, sustainability, post-natural perspectives and soil from a ceramic point of view.
In the second part, Maria will show you traditional craft practices that grew out of a close relationship with the environment, and contemporary ceramic artists whose work explores similar ideas.
You’ll come away with fresh perspectives on ceramics and a few new references for your own practice.

What is a Ceramics Pill?
A Ceramics Pill is a free online session, about an hour long, where an artist or teacher shares one perspective on ceramics with you.
Mati Cini has led sessions on woodfiring and kilns and on the history of Sicilian ceramics, and Adele Williams led one on working with found clay.
The sessions are open to everyone, from complete beginners to people who have worked with clay for decades.
